Lower East Side
Southern Manhattan bordered by the East River, Houston Street, Broadway and Canal Street. Neighborhoods include Chinatown, Little Italy and NoLita.
Unlike any other neighborhoods where modern glass towers prevail, the narrow crisscrossing streets of the Lower East Side still offer traces of its vibrant, rag-tag history. But today, the pushcarts and pickle barrels of a century ago have been replaced by art galleries and New Asian restaurants, reflecting the interests of the latest generation of hopeful strivers: up-and-coming creative media types, who are drawn to the area for its prolific nightlife and relatively affordable rents. Beloved institutions like Katz's Delicatessen and the Sunshine Cinema are still going strong, but are now surrounded by boutiques and espresso cafes catering to the sophisticated tastes of downtown residents.
